Aotearoa, land of the long wide bare cupboard

Writer: Who Did You Help Today? Who Did You Help Today?

Child Poverty Action Group report: written by Caitlin Neuwelt-Kearns

Our Who Did You Help Today? volunteers have been super busy packing and distributing food boxes to the families of our Homework Club schools around New Zealand, and thanks to the extremely generous donations made by so many businesses and individuals, we’ve been able to make this happen.

But why?

This report from the Child Poverty Action Group: “Aotearoa, land of the long wide bare cupboard” explains why.

While Covid-19 has presented new and interesting challenges to all of us, for many families it has had a severe impact on the continuity of their weekly income - to the point they struggle to provide adequate food for their children.

And to quote the author of the report, Caitlin Neuwelt-Kearns “Crises amplifies inequality. In a ‘land of plenty’ that produces enough food for 20 million people, strong leadership and coordination is needed to address inadequate access to appropriate food among 20 percent of our population.”
